We got this question on our profile page and I wanted to share it with our Members to see if they might be able to help.

"Hi all, I'm making some animal masks for a musical - they want to wear them normally as well as sliding them up onto their forehead for when on all fours. Was just wondering if ppl had ideas for the best ways to have them tie to the head - I'm thinking two elastic straps maybe. Any help much appreciated, thanks!" - *Masktastic

Personally, I like the idea of elastic since it's flexible and easy to position.  I wonder if a mechanism not unlike a helmet might be used too?  I imagine this might be something like a plain headband to which the mask attaches via rivets which are *just* loose enough to allow the leather to be moved up and down.  The problem with this is I imagine the more you move the leather up and down, the more it might loosen up and not stand up by itself.  I'm sure those of you experienced with more complex masks might have better suggestions, so fire away, guys!

You may have to order a shoulder from Tandy then. Seems to be the only size that wouldn't give you too much to work with.

oh and is the animal the leather is from change how it reacts to being worked with? Ex deer vs cow vs goat vs elk etc etc , or is the only thing that maters is veg-tan and thickness?

The thickness is measured in oz for hides. This buying guide at Tandy might help: [link]

As for the different types of hides, I am only experienced with cowhide, so I couldn't tell you. Sometimes the descriptions on the hides on Tandy's site help, such as pig leather being soft and good for lining. My guess is that with any kind of hide, it will depend on the type of cut, thickness, and tanning method.

For purposes of tooling, I turn to vegetable tanned cowhide because it safely heats in the oven, where I harden my masks. Heating up something like chrome tanned is dangerous due to the fumes that exude from it when heated. Hope that helps!
